Initiation into the Healthcare Realm:
Laurie Beth, affectionately known as LB, first found herself drawn toward Healthcare during her senior year of high school. A visit to the famous Bodies exhibit sparked an undeniable fascination within her for the complex interplay of human anatomy and physiology. This sparked a journey that led her to nursing. After two years of dedicated bedside nursing—a role she cherished—LB recognized a need to change in her working schedule. This realization propelled her toward her next career milestone: becoming a Nurse Practitioner. As LB explains, “Healthcare offers an abundance of options, catering to different schedules and even the nuances of individual passions.
Milestones and Learnings:
LB’s journey through the healthcare landscape has been marked by numerous personal milestones, particularly in cardiology. From mastering postoperative care for open-heart surgery patients to removing chest tubes, she has gathered a wealth of diverse experiences. These also extend to various healthcare domains, such as radiology and intensive care units (ICUs). Each of these sectors, she notes, has its unique set of challenges and benchmarks. Laurie emphasizes the importance of healthcare professionals finding their niche—the area that truly aligns with their passion and resonates with their individual interests.
Fulfillment and Impact:
Reflecting on the fulfillment she gains from her role, LB compares the experience of taking a car to a mechanic. Just as the mechanic wields the knowledge and expertise to decode and solve complex issues for the car owner, healthcare professionals often interact with patients and their families during vulnerable times, where they seek expert knowledge and compassionate assistance. LB perceives the ability to meet these needs as a profound gift: “Through earnest efforts, continuous learning, and an unwavering ‘can-do’ attitude, we as healthcare professionals are often called upon by patients and their families to offer clear communication and kind care. Having the knowledge to meet some of these needs is a true gift.”
