Overview
The Health Education Systems,Inc is an entrance exam used by many nursing programs in the United States. The exam assesses your academic potential and provides the school with a clear picture of your performance in higher education.
The HESI A2 is commonly used by LPN/LVN, RN, and APRN programs
The HESI A2 is a timed, electronic test taken on a computer. It’s a multiple-choice exam (choose one correct answer from a list of possible answers) with five scored sections and one unscored personality assessment. The scored sections are further broken into a few areas for a total of nine subjects. The five scored subjects include:
- English Language
- Math
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Anatomy and Physiology
Your school decides how long you’ll have to complete the exam, but most schools give students between two and three hours. The number of questions in each section includes:
English Language
- 50 grammar questions
- 50 vocabulary questions
- 47 reading questions
Mathematics
50 general math questions covering:
- Addition
- Subtraction
- Multiplication
- Fractions
- Decimals
- Ratios and proportions
- Household measurements
Biology – 25 questions
Chemistry – 25 questions
Physics – 25 questions
Anatomy and Physiology – 25 questions
Personality assessment
- 30 critical thinking questions
- 30 questions related to personality and learning styles
Most schools require at least 75%. However, the minimum required score is up to the school, so check with the admissions office before you take the exam.
The cost of the HESI A2 can range between $30 and $110. Some schools offer the exam for no cost, so check with any schools you’re interested in applying to before registering for the test. If you take the test virtually, you might incur an additional fee for the virtual proctor, usually around $25. Always check with your school about their testing fees. If you’re applying to several schools, you might be able to use one score for all of the applications if the test version meets the requirements for all of the schools.

STUDY TIPS:
Make A Plan
You might want to dive right in and start studying. However, it’s like practicing your baseball swing with a golf club without a plan! To make your plan, ask yourself these three questions:
- How many weeks do I have to study? (We recommend taking six weeks)
- What subjects make me worry the most?
- What resources do I have/need to study?
Plot out each subject across the six weeks. Build in repetition, which means you should study all subjects throughout the six-week study period, so you study each subject more than once. To make the most of your study plan, organize your resources, find a quiet place to study, and map out your plan on a calendar. Schedule at least two hours of study time daily for six weeks to be well-prepared
